CALGARY, AB (December 17): The NGIF Accelerator is proud to launch the Global Gas Innovation Call, an international, industry-driven competition accelerating next-generation cleantech innovations for Canada’s natural gas sector. This competition provides startups and SMEs with pathways to validate, scale, and reduce commercialization risk across the Canadian natural gas value chain.
Through NGIF Accelerator’s Industry Grants program, selected applicants can access non-dilutive funding of up to $500,000 CAD per project, covering up to 50% of eligible expenses, industry demonstration sites in Canada, adopter-centric feedback, and mentorship from leading energy companies.
Who should apply
The $2MM global competition is open to startups and SMEs developing cleantech solutions for upstream, midstream, and downstream natural gas facilities. Applications are now open and will be accepted until February 17, 2026. International applicants are encouraged to participate to showcase their solutions.
Focus areas
This competition is seeking innovations in three key categories:
- Sustainable energy innovations: Innovative technologies that can improve the environmental performance of natural gas across its value chain. The focus is on leading technologies in areas such as energy efficiency, waste heat utilization, NG heat pumps, heat/cooling/power generation, and NG resiliency for residential appliances.
- Lower-emission gas innovations: Carbon capture, utilization & storage (CCUS) and renewable natural gas (RNG).
- Open category: Other solutions for the natural gas industry, including pyrolysis, syngas, water management, leak detection, and LNG.

“Through the Global Gas Innovation Call, NGIF Accelerator is helping to shape the future of Canada’s natural gas industry,” said John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Accelerator. “This initiative connects global innovators with real-world testing opportunities and industry partners, accelerating technologies that reduce emissions, increasing efficiency, and delivering measurable impact. Our Industry Grants program supports this journey by de-risking projects through field trials and pilots, driving adoption, and commercialization.”
“Canadians want and need the affordable, reliable energy service offering they have come to expect from the natural gas industry. When we created NGIF, it was our vision to bring the entire natural gas value chain together to support the development of the technologies that enhance environmental and economic performance for the sector. I am glad to see our vision in action as NGIF continues to support innovative technologies,” said Timothy M. Egan, President and CEO, Canadian Gas Association and Chair, NGIF Capital Corporation.

About Industry Grants program
The Industry Grants program is industry-led and offers non-dilutive grants to fund early-stage startups for technology development and field demonstration. The program specifically de-risks pre-commercial technology solutions that have the potential to increase the environmental performance of the natural gas sector. Each project in the program will accelerate technology readiness level progressions through controlled pilot testing and field trials to advance commercialization.
About NGIF Accelerator
NGIF Accelerator is the not-for-profit arm of NGIF Capital and operates all technology and innovation programs. The NGIF Accelerator mandate is to de-risk and accelerate technology development by supporting startups through their pilot projects, field trials, and industry validation. It will coordinate with federal and provincial governments to co-fund projects to advance market commercialization. NGIF Accelerator currently operates the Industry Grants program and administers the NGIF Emissions Testing Centre program.
About Canadian Gas Association
The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) is the voice of Canada’s gas energy delivery industry, including natural gas, renewable natural gas (RNG), and hydrogen. Its members are distribution and transmission companies, equipment manufacturers and suppliers, and other service providers. Today, natural gas meets almost 40 percent of the country’s energy needs.
