NGIF ACCELERATOR LAUNCHES $9MM METHANE REDUCTION DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM WITH GOVERNMENT OF ALBERTA SUPPORT, PART OF NEARLY $29MM JOINT INVESTMENT TO CUT EMISSIONS IN OIL AND GAS SECTOR

November 12, 2025

CALGARY (November 12, 2025): NGIF Accelerator today announced the launch of its Methane Reduction Demonstration Program, a $9MM global call for applications designed to validate and accelerate the deployment of emerging methane monitoring, quantification, and reduction technologies. The program will support field pilots, technology demonstrations, and early commercial deployments in Alberta with the goal of advancing solutions that can scale to reduce methane emissions.

This announcement follows the Government of Alberta’s commitment, made earlier today by The Honourable Minister Rebecca Schulz at Spartan Controls alongside Justin Riemer, CEO of ERA, John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Accelerator, and other industry representatives. The Government confirmed $7MM in funding through Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund to support the NGIF Accelerator, alongside $22.4MM to Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA), as part of a joint Methane Reduction Program. Under this program, ERA will oversee the Deployment Program, and NGIF Accelerator will lead the Demonstration Program. An additional $3MM in matching funds will be provided by industry through the NGIF Accelerator Industry Grants program.

The Methane Reduction Demonstration Program launches a unified, two-stage process to fast-track methane reduction technologies from pilot to commercial scale.

Gate 1, delivered by NGIF Accelerator’s Industry Grants program and backed by 10 leading Canadian energy companies, will host a multi-year global competition inviting startups and SMEs developing emissions reduction technology solutions for Alberta. Selected projects, through an industry-driven governance model, will be demonstrated under real operating conditions and funded with Industry Grants funding, aligned with practical operational needs.

Gate 2, backed by the Government of Alberta, provides TIER matching funding to approved Industry Grants projects. An independent committee of experts will assess each project against the TIER mandate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity from Alberta’s industrial facilities for TIER funding consideration.

The Methane Reduction Demonstration Program gives methane-technology innovators a clear, unified path to secure both industry and government funding and accelerates the shift from demonstration to adoption.

The initiative is designed to support startups and SMEs developing solutions at technology readiness levels (TRL) 7–9. Target areas include methane monitoring, quantification, and reduction across upstream oil and gas facilities, as well as midstream and downstream natural gas facilities. Innovators worldwide are invited to apply, with up to $750,000 per project through a combination of Industry and TIER funding, covering up to 75% of eligible costs. Selected recipients may also have the opportunity to demonstrate their technologies across multiple operator sites, accelerating market validation, strengthening operator confidence, and driving adoption across Alberta’s energy industry.

“The world needs more responsibly produced energy, and Alberta is answering that call. When it comes to methane emissions, our industry continues to deliver results by developing and testing new industrial technologies and retrofitting existing sites. Solutions developed in Alberta are being deployed here and around the world. These new investments and programs will continue to help lower costs, protect jobs, and attract investment to maintain Alberta’s leadership in this space,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas.

“The Methane Reduction Deployment Program will make it easier for energy producers to deploy innovative, yet under-adopted, technologies that are already in the market. With access to capital, oil and gas companies can cut methane emissions and expand internationally,” said Justin Riemer, CEO, ERA.

“The Methane Reduction Demonstration Program will make it easier for energy technology startups to develop, validate and refine their methane reduction solutions through pilot demonstrations within energy company operations, “said John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Accelerator. “By providing a unified access point for industry and Alberta government funding, energy technology startups can fast-track their methane solutions from development to market impact.”

“Through the Methane Reduction Demonstration Program, we’re calling on innovators from across Canada and around the world to bring forward technologies that will strengthen our energy systems and deliver real, measurable results in emissions reductions. This initiative reflects our industry’s commitment to practical innovation, advancing environmental performance while ensuring Canadians continue to benefit from affordable, reliable energy,” said Timothy M. Egan, President and CEO, Canadian Gas Association, and Chair, NGIF Capital Corporation.

The NGIF-led program complements Emissions Reduction Alberta’s $22.4 million Methane Reduction Deployment Program, which supports the deployment of commercial-ready methane-reduction technologies. Together, these initiatives represent nearly $29MM in TIER funding to advance both near-commercial and commercial-ready solutions, demonstrating Alberta’s leadership in technology, innovation, and industry collaboration. About Industry Grants program
The Industry Grants program is industry-led and offers non-dilutive grants to fund early-stage startups for technology development and field demonstration. The program specifically de-risks pre-commercial technology solutions that have the potential to increase the environmental performance of the natural gas sector. Each project in the program will accelerate technology readiness level progressions through controlled pilot testing and field trials to advance commercialization.

About NGIF Accelerator
NGIF Accelerator is the not-for-profit arm of NGIF Capital and operates all technology and innovation programs. The NGIF Accelerator mandate is to de-risk and accelerate technology development by supporting startups through their pilot projects, field trials, and industry validation. It will coordinate with federal and provincial governments to co-fund projects to advance market commercialization. NGIF Accelerator currently operates the Industry Grants program and administers the NGIF Emissions Testing Centre program.

About Canadian Gas Association
The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) is the voice of Canada’s gas energy delivery industry, including natural gas, renewable natural gas (RNG), and hydrogen. Its members are distribution and transmission companies, equipment manufacturers and suppliers, and other service providers. Today, natural gas meets almost 40 percent of the country’s energy needs.
