NGIF ACCELERATOR SUPPORTS COOLL TO VALIDATE AND INTRODUCE DUTCH GAS ADSORPTION HEAT PUMP TECHNOLOGY TO NORTH AMERICA

October 1, 2025

CALGARY, AB (October 1, 2025): NGIF Accelerator, a leader in supporting energy innovation for Canada’s natural gas sector, has announced $375,000 in funding to COOLL through its Industry Grants program.

Cooll, a Netherlands-based innovator and Global Cleantech Challenge finalist, will use this project to validate its next-generation gas adsorption heat pump technology for North American conditions, advancing the environmental and economic strength of the natural gas sector.

Cooll’s patented adsorption heat pump technology has the potential to optimize natural gas consumption while lowering associated CO₂ emissions relative to modern condensing boilers. Designed with flexibility in mind, the system can also integrate renewable gases such as hydrogen, helping consumers reduce emissions from residential heating while ensuring comfort in cold climates.

Cooll’s technology features a compact, indoor-ready system that is compatible with high-temperature heating applications, not limited to underfloor heating. Its proprietary activated carbon and ammonia-based thermally driven process enables high efficiency, low electricity use, and strong performance in low outdoor temperatures, providing a scalable pathway to efficient heating solutions for Canadian and North American households.

With NGIF Accelerator’s support, Cooll’s technology will undergo independent validation at GTI in Chicago, ensuring its suitability for Canadian and U.S. market applications. The project will also complete a design study for a 15–25 kW cold-climate system, advancing commercialization in typical North American residential settings.

By achieving hydrogen costs below $2/kg when paired with renewable energy, P2H2’s patented AEM electrolyzers offer a path forward for scalable and economically viable hydrogen production. Following this project, the technology is expected to reach TRL 8 readiness for commercialization and mass production.

“By supporting Cooll’s innovative heat pump technology, we are helping bring forward solutions that not only lower emissions but also give Canadian consumers access to affordable, reliable, and energy-efficient home heating options,” said John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Accelerator. “This project aligns with our commitment to advancing energy innovation across the natural gas value chain and empowering consumers with smarter, more efficient energy choices.”

“This project is a great opportunity for Cooll to familiarize itself with the Canadian and North American markets. We look forward to the collaboration with NGIF, GTI, and UTD. We are eager to demonstrate the performance of our technology for cold climates,” said Johannes Burger, founder and CTO of COOLL.

“Canadians want and need the affordable, reliable energy service offering they have come to expect from the natural gas industry. When we created NGIF, it was our vision to bring the entire natural gas value chain together to support the development of the technologies that enhance environmental and economic performance for the sector. I am glad to see our vision in action as NGIF continues to support technologies like Cooll’s gas adsorption heat pump,” said Timothy M. Egan, President and CEO, Canadian Gas Association, and Chair, NGIF Capital Corporation.

About Industry Grants program
The Industry Grants program is industry-led and offers non-dilutive grants to fund early-stage startups for technology development and field demonstration. The program specifically de-risks pre-commercial technology solutions that have the potential to increase the environmental performance of the natural gas sector. Each project in the program will accelerate technology readiness level progressions through controlled pilot testing and field trials to advance commercialization.

About NGIF Accelerator
NGIF Accelerator is the not-for-profit arm of NGIF Capital and operates all technology and innovation programs. The NGIF Accelerator mandate is to de-risk and accelerate technology development by supporting startups through their pilot projects, field trials, and industry validation. It will coordinate with federal and provincial governments to co-fund projects to advance market commercialization. NGIF Accelerator currently operates the Industry Grants program and administers the NGIF Emissions Testing Centre program.

About COOLL
Cooll is a Dutch climate-tech innovator focused on revolutionizing residential heating. Established in 2009 as a spin-off from European Space Agency (ESA) projects at the University of Twente (NL), Cooll has built proprietary IP-protected adsorption technologies to provide energy-efficient alternatives to gas boilers. About Canadian Gas Association
The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) is the voice of Canada’s gas energy delivery industry, including natural gas, renewable natural gas (RNG), and hydrogen. Its members are distribution and transmission companies, equipment manufacturers and suppliers, and other service providers. Today, natural gas meets almost 40 percent of the country’s energy needs.
