NGIF ACCELERATOR ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR MITICO’S INNOVATIVE CCUS TECHNOLOGY

November 7, 2024

LOS ANGELES, CA (November 07, 2024): NGIF Accelerator continues to support Canada’s emissions reduction efforts by announcing a funding commitment of Can$ 727,215 to Mitico (formerly C-Quester) for its carbon capture technology. This funding will support the development and demonstration of their technology that promises to efficiently capture over 95% of CO2 emissions from diverse sources, including power plants, boilers, and industrial facilities.

A Global Cleantech Challenge finalist, Mitico’s proprietary technology utilizes granular metal carbonate (GMC) sorbents. GMC is abundant, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly, making it an ideal solution for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Their technological process involves the GMC absorbing CO2 and converting it into bicarbonate, which can be recycled and reused, resulting in a purified CO2 form suitable for green chemistry processes.

The support from NGIF Accelerator will enable Mitico to conduct extensive testing under real-world conditions, totalling over 500 operational hours across three commercial cases. This critical demonstration phase will help validate the technology’s scalability for commercial deployment. The project will follow a three-phase testing approach, optimizing operational limits and refining the application.

The test work will be hosted at CanmetENERGY Ottawa (CE-O), a federal research laboratory that is part of Natural Resources Canada. Their mission is to develop energy science and technology solutions for the environmental and economic benefit of Canadians. CE-O designs, constructs and operates numerous unique pilot-scale facilities, one of which has been upgraded to supply flue gas for testing of Mitico’s technology. The facility is capable of supporting test work at steady state or dynamic conditions from combustion of natural gas or biomass, covering a range of conditions that are important for reducing emissions in Canadian industries.

“We are excited to support Mitico as they develop their carbon capture technology to reduce emissions, demonstrating a cleantech solution that can be adopted in Canada and globally,” said John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Accelerator. “Our Industry Grants program and its focus on de-risking clean technologies through field trials and pilots are part of NGIF’s integrated model of industry validation, customer creation, and technology commercialization.”

“Mitico is proud to be the carbon capture technology provider for this pioneering partnership supported by NGIF Accelerator. Our goal is to demonstrate the effectiveness of point-source carbon capture as a sustainable, economic, and scalable solution. By harnessing technology developed at Caltech and working with industry partners, we can set a new standard for carbon mitigation,” said Clément Cid, CEO and co-founder, Mitico.

“Canadians want and need the affordable, reliable, clean energy service offering they have come to expect from the natural gas industry. When we created NGIF, it was our vision to bring the entire natural gas value chain together to support cleantech development that enhances environmental and economic performance for the sector. I am glad to see our vision in action as NGIF continues to support technologies like Mitico’s carbon capture technology,” said Timothy M. Egan, President and CEO, Canadian Gas Association and Chair, NGIF Capital Corporation.

About Industry Grants program
The Industry Grants program is industry-led and offers non-dilutive grants to fund early-stage startups for technology development and field demonstration. The program specifically de-risks pre-commercial technology solutions that have the potential to increase the environmental performance of the natural gas sectorEach project in the program will accelerate technology readiness level progressions through controlled pilot testing and field trials to advance commercialization.

About NGIF Accelerator
NGIF Accelerator is the not-for-profit arm of NGIF Capital and operates all technology and innovation programs. The NGIF Accelerator mandate is to de-risk and accelerate technology development by supporting startups through their pilot projects, field trials, and industry validation. It will coordinate with federal and provincial governments to co-fund projects to advance market commercialization. NGIF Accelerator currently operates the Industry Grants program and administers the NGIF Emissions Testing Centre program.

About Mitico
Mitico offers state-of-the-art services and equipment to capture carbon dioxide (CO2). Their patent-pending granulated metal carbonate sorption technology (GMC) developed at Caltech captures over 95% of the CO2 emitted from post-combustion point sources (flue gases), including gas-fired power plants and boilers, and waste-to-energy and biomass-to-energy facilities. Mitico can enable carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) as a service at a low cost.

About CanmetENERGY Ottawa
CanmetENERGY Ottawa (CE-O) leads the development of energy science and technology solutions for the environmental and economic benefit of Canadians. They meet this mission through application of scientific expertise, leveraging their unique pilot-scale facilities, accelerating the advancement of clean energy technologies from early research to commercialization, and collaborating with partners who include manufacturers, academia, planners, builders and all levels of government.

About Canadian Gas Association
The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) is the voice of Canada’s gas energy delivery industry, including natural gas, renewable natural gas (RNG), and hydrogen. Its members are distribution and transmission companies, equipment manufacturers and suppliers and other service providers. Today, natural gas meets almost 40 per cent of the country’s energy needs.
