The Right Honourable Mark Carney, P.C., M.P.
Prime Minister of Canada
Dear Prime Minister Carney,
On behalf of the investors in NGIF Capital’s Cleantech Ventures Fund I (“CV Fund I”), we congratulate you on your election victory and share your ambition to make Canada an energy superpower by unlocking private-sector investment, responsibly developing our world-class natural resources, and reducing emissions. To discuss our shared goals, we are hereby requesting an opportunity for our CV Fund I investors to meet with you to outline the Canadian natural gas energy advantage and how we can use it to help deliver on the “Canada Strong” agenda.
Since our first close in April 2021, CV Fund I, with CAD $50 million in committed capital, has invested in 13 innovative cleantech companies with emissions reduction solutions for Canada. Our fund, backed by leading Canadian natural gas producers, midstream and utility operators, including ARC Resources, Birchcliff Energy, Tourmaline Oil, TC Energy, ATCO, FortisBC, and TriSummit Utilities, was created expressly to advance technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the natural gas value chain. These companies are demonstrating emissions reductions can be achieved through investments in Canadian technology innovation, not emissions caps.
Our targeted investments span:
- Methane mitigation (continuous leak-detection sensors; predictive analytics for pipeline integrity)
- Low-emissions power systems for remote operations (eliminating venting from pneumatic devices)
- Advanced materials & carbon capture (compact membranes; on-site CO₂ separation)
- Digital infrastructure (for emissions tracking and optimization)
- Emerging gaseous fuels (renewable natural gas and novel methane-pyrolysis hydrogen)
- Energy efficiency (minimizing/using wasted energy and improving processes through technology)
These companies have not only demonstrated measurable emissions reductions in pilot and commercial deployments but have also secured follow-on funding and global partnerships, evidence that Canada can lead the world in low-emission, reliable energy while driving economic growth. By putting private capital to work in high-impact companies, our investors have answered your call for economic sovereignty and reinforced Canada’s global competitiveness.
We stand ready to partner with your government to:
- Invest in new technologies to improve environmental performance;
- Attract international investment to Canada to grow companies and create more quality jobs for Canadians;
- Scale technology companies from lab to export markets; and
- Meet and exceed emissions targets in Canada and abroad.
Canada’s energy sector has the resources, the talent, and the vision to build our nation’s energy sovereignty and deliver on your G7-leading growth ambitions. The investments made by CV Fund I are concrete proof that private-sector capital can and will flow into emissions-reducing solutions led by our industry.
As you seek to strengthen Canada’s autonomy, resilience, and security, investments made by CV Fund I bolster your objectives, supporting economic growth for our country and driving improvements in environmental performance.
NGIF Capital is committed to working closely with your government to ensure Canada remains at the forefront of global energy innovation. We look forward to engaging with you and your cabinet to support Canada’s continued prosperity and your ambitious vision for our nation’s energy future.
Respectfully,
