NGIF ACCELERATOR ANNOUNCES FUNDING THROUGH ITS INDUSTRY GRANTS PROGRAM FOR NEW WAVE CLEAN HYDROGEN PRODUCTION

April 2, 2024

CALGARY, AB (April 2, 2024): As part of its efforts to accelerate technology and innovation in Canada’s gaseous energy industry, NGIF Accelerator is pleased to announce $872,017 in funding provided through its Industry Grants program to New Wave Hydrogen, Inc. (New Wave). The project will see the development and demonstration of natural gas reforming for hydrogen production.

Originally known as Standing Wave Reformers, Inc. (SWR), Calgary-based New Wave’s objective is to develop a new energy paradigm that provides low-cost, low-emission hydrogen, resulting in rapid greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions.

New Wave is changing hydrogen generation with its shockwave or supersonic compression energy transfer technology. This approach requires no water, generates no CO2, is scalable, and is low-cost for both distributed and centralized production. The technology’s ability to integrate into existing plants and lines will help accelerate low-cost hydrogen production.

New Wave’s technological process directly cracks methane into hydrogen and carbon black with no direct GHG emissions, utilizing shockwave and compression heating as the primary energy sources. This technology has the potential to significantly reduce GHG emissions in the transportation, production, and power sectors in Canada.

The current program includes bench-to-field demonstration tests, carbon R&D, and commercialization roadmap development.

New Wave Hydrogen’s technology offers near-term, financially feasible low-cost hydrogen production,” said John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Accelerator and Managing Partner of NGIF Cleantech Ventures. “Our Industry Grants program and its focus on de-risking clean technologies through field trials and pilots are part of NGIF’s integrated model of industry validation, customer creation, and technology commercialization.”

“We are honoured to be a part of the NGIF Accelerator’s Industry Grants program and to have the support of their outstanding industry members. The vision and benefits of this program offer a vital lifeline to new technologies. NGIF is also unique in that it focuses on and enables the important connections between industry end-users and emerging technologies. NGIF Accelerator and its programs create a strong platform that is designed to accelerate the path to commercialization,” said Kathleen O’Neil, CEO, New Wave Hydrogen.

“Canadians want and need the affordable, reliable, clean energy service offering they have come to expect from the natural gas industry. When we created NGIF, it was our vision to bring the entire natural gas value chain together to support cleantech development that enhances environmental and economic performance for the sector. I am glad to see our vision in action as NGIF continues to support technologies like New Wave’s supersonic compression technology,” said Timothy M. Egan, President and CEO, Canadian Gas Association and Chair, NGIF Capital Corporation.

About Industry Grants program
The Industry Grants program is industry-led and offers non-dilutive grants to fund early-stage startups for technology development and field demonstration. The program specifically de-risks pre-commercial technology solutions that have the potential to increase the environmental performance of the natural gas sectorEach project in the program will accelerate technology readiness level progressions through controlled pilot testing and field trials to advance commercialization.

About NGIF Accelerator
NGIF Accelerator is the not-for-profit arm of NGIF Capital and will operate all technology and innovation programs. The NGIF Accelerator mandate is to de-risk and accelerate technology development by supporting startups through their pilot projects, field trials, and industry validation. It will coordinate with federal and provincial governments to co-fund projects to advance market commercialization. NGIF Accelerator currently operates the Industry Grants program and the Emissions Testing Centre program.

About New Wave Hydrogen
New Wave’s mission is to create a new clean energy paradigm that offers financially feasible clean hydrogen in a near-term time frame, providing rapid and significant greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions. A key differentiator is the ability to use existing infrastructure. This eliminates the decades-long timelines and massive infrastructure investments that are often associated with energy transitions. Our New Wave is truly transformational, offering a near-term solution that maintains energy, climate, and economic security. For more details, visit www.newwaveh2.com.

About Canadian Gas Association
The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) is the voice of Canada’s gas energy delivery industry, including natural gas, renewable natural gas (RNG), and hydrogen. Its members are distribution and transmission companies, equipment manufacturers and suppliers and other service providers. Today, natural gas meets 38 per cent of the country’s energy needs.
