LIEGE, BE (August 6, 2024): As part of NGIF Accelerator’s efforts to drive innovation and accelerate technology commercialization in Canada, its Industry Grants program is pleased to announce a funding contribution of $92,359 towards the development and validation of Mitis’ micro-combined heat and power-heat pump (mCHP-HP) system. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by deploying efficient, decentralized energy converters that use a high-speed turbomachinery micro gas turbine.
Mitis is a Liege, Belgium-based high-tech start-up focusing on the development of oil-free flameless combustion micro gas turbines for micro-combined heat and power applications in commercial and multi-residential buildings. The company’s products are recognized for their low emissions, low noise, multi-fuel capability, and low total cost of ownership.
The partnership between Mitis and NGIF Accelerator will see the exhibition of a demonstrator in the Canadian market that combines the Mitis micro-10 micro gas turbine with a vapour compression heat pump for efficient combined heat and electricity using natural gas.
The project will also focus on the development and testing of this new generation of ultra-efficient gas heat pumps for the Canadian and North American markets to demonstrate a reduction in emissions for apartment buildings.
This partnership is possible thanks to NGIF Accelerator’s collaboration with the EU-funded project LCBA Canada, which facilitates cleantech innovation transfer between Canada and the European Union.

“We are excited to partner with Mitis on this project that has the potential to transform natural gas heating while further reducing emissions,” said John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Accelerator and Managing Partner of NGIF Cleantech Ventures. “Our Industry Grants program and its focus on de-risking clean technologies through field trials and pilots are part of NGIF’s integrated model of industry validation, customer creation, and technology commercialization.”
“This project represents a significant step towards reducing emissions and providing efficient and affordable local power generation,” said the CEO of Mitis, Michel Delanaye.
“Canadians want and need the affordable, reliable, clean energy service offering they have come to expect from the natural gas industry. When we created NGIF, it was our vision to bring the entire natural gas value chain together to support cleantech development that enhances environmental and economic performance for the sector. I am glad to see our vision in action as NGIF continues to support technologies like Mitis’ microturbine heat pump system,” said Timothy M. Egan, President and CEO, Canadian Gas Association and Chair, NGIF Capital Corporation.
Industry Grants’ Participants and Project Partners

About Industry Grants program
The Industry Grants program is industry-led and offers non-dilutive grants to fund early-stage startups for technology development and field demonstration. The program specifically de-risks pre-commercial technology solutions that have the potential to increase the environmental performance of the natural gas sector. Each project in the program will accelerate technology readiness level progressions through controlled pilot testing and field trials to advance commercialization.
About NGIF Accelerator
NGIF Accelerator is the not-for-profit arm of NGIF Capital and will operate all technology and innovation programs. The NGIF Accelerator mandate is to de-risk and accelerate technology development by supporting startups through their pilot projects, field trials, and industry validation. It will coordinate with federal and provincial governments to co-fund projects to advance market commercialization. NGIF Accelerator currently operates the Industry Grants program and administers the NGIF Emissions Testing Centre program.
About Mitis
Mitis is a high-tech start-up developing unique, flameless combustion micro gas turbines for energy conversion. The microturbine is disruptive due to the flameless nature of the combustion – it produces incredibly low emissions while offering industry-leading fuel flexibility. Mitis holds a number of patents on the technology and its applications. Mitis is based in Liege, Belgium, with business activities starting in 2013. In 2020, Mitis secured European R&D (EIC, Horizon Europe) funding, enabling Mitis to ramp up the development of the micro gas turbine towards industrialisation and market introduction.
About Canadian Gas Association
The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) is the voice of Canada’s gas energy delivery industry, including natural gas, renewable natural gas (RNG), and hydrogen. Its members are distribution and transmission companies, equipment manufacturers, suppliers and other service providers. Today, natural gas meets almost 40 per cent of the country’s energy needs.
