Canada’s Natural Gas Industry Backs Eight Made-in-Canada Methane Reduction Technologies

June 16, 2026

CALGARY, AB (June 16, 2026): A consortium of Canada’s leading natural gas producers and utilities announced the selection of eight approved innovative methane management technologies through its Methane Reduction Demonstration Program (MRDP), a program funded by the Government of Alberta with co-funding and guidance from industry through NGIF Accelerator’s (NGIF) Industry Grants Program.

Through the MRDP, the industry and the Government of Alberta are contributing $2.8 million via Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA) and its Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund. The public investment is matched by ongoing, voluntary industry funding through NGIF’s Industry Grants Program, an industry-led, industry-financed effort as a practical way to drive measurable emissions reductions across the natural gas value chain.

What sets the model apart is what comes after the grant funding: industry members providing access to assets, sharing data from real-world operations, and providing market access to finalists. For early-stage Canadian cleantech companies, that operator engagement is vital for a successful pilot and broad commercial adoption.

Industry Funding Members:
Apex Utilities Inc.; ARC Resources Ltd.; ATCO Ltd.; Birchcliff Energy Ltd.; Canadian Natural Resources Limited; Pacific Northern Gas Ltd. (PNG); and Tourmaline Oil Corp.

Selected Projects:

  • Forefront Energy

MRDP Funding: $381,430 | Developing Forefront Energy’s Zero-Emissions Generator (ZEG)

  • Pure Catalytic Inc.

MRDP Funding: $500,000 | Validating a flameless catalytic oxidizer for storage tank vents.

  • Global Power Technology

MRDP Funding: $159,000 | Optimizing thermoelectric generators for intermittent methane destruction.

  • Occam’s Technology

MRDP Funding: $500,000 | Demonstrating the direct oxyfire carbon capture process.

  • Mbrace Energy

MRDP Funding: $400,000 | Deploying a mobile multiphase compression system to capture and redirect gas.

  • Process Ecology, Inc.

MRDP Funding: $138,431 | Deploying RT-GHG, a real-time digital emissions management platform.

  • Xplorobot

MRDP Funding: $300,000 | Commercializing an AI-powered, handheld laser gas imaging system that democratizes methane leak detection.

  • Ambyint, Inc.

MRDP Funding: $500,000 | Advancing InfinityPL, an AI-driven autonomous platform targeting methane venting.

“Alberta’s proven approach to methane reductions is simple: focus on practical solutions, support industry adoption and deliver results. Innovative, made-in-Alberta technologies are lowering costs, creating jobs and reducing emissions today while keeping industry competitive and strengthening Alberta’s energy sector for the future.” Grant Hunter, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas.

“By pairing NGIF’s industry funding with the Government of Alberta’s support through AEPA, we are creating a powerful pathway to move these innovations from the pilot stage to full commercial deployment,” said John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Accelerator. “These projects align with our member’s mission to support technologies that can make a real difference in reducing methane emissions across Alberta and Canada.”

Following the announcement, the selected technologies will proceed to contractual agreements and project refinement, with implementation scheduled to commence in the coming months.

The next batch of finalists, currently under industry review, will be announced later this year as part of the program’s three-cohort structure, with another intake expected to open in the same period.

About Industry Grants program
The Industry Grants program is an industry-led effort that offers non-dilutive grants to fund early-stage startups for technology development and field demonstration. The program specifically de-risks pre-commercial technology solutions that have the potential to increase the environmental performance of the natural gas sector. Each project in the program will progress through technology readiness levels through controlled pilot testing and field trials to advance commercialization.

About NGIF Accelerator
NGIF Accelerator is the not-for-profit arm of NGIF Capital and operates all of the latter organization’s technology and innovation programs. The NGIF Accelerator mandate is to de-risk and accelerate technology development by supporting startups through their pilot projects, field trials, and industry validation. It coordinates with federal and provincial governments to co-fund projects to advance market commercialization. NGIF Accelerator currently operates the Industry Grants program and administers the NGIF Emissions Testing Centre program.

Trican
Frac pumpers are large fuel consumers that emit large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Current fracturing equipment in Alberta is typically powered by diesel-based or bi-fuel (diesel & natural gas) bolt-on kit (Tier 2) engines. Trican’s Caterpillar Tier 4 Dynamic Gas Blending engine proposes to displace up to 85% of diesel with natural gas. The goal of field testing at ETC is to understand the performance of the Tier 4 Engines during operations in Canada. This includes, but is not limited to, diesel displacement performance during seasonal conditions, validation of the low emissions fracturing spread, and emissions performance compared to diesel and Tier 2 enginess.
