NGIF Accelerator Announces First Batch of Finalists of the Methane Reduction Demonstration Program to Advance Alberta’s Methane Innovation

June 10, 2026

CALGARY, AB (June 10, 2026): NGIF Accelerator (NGIF) is proud to announce the selection of eight innovative methane management technologies as the first batch of finalists of the Methane Reduction Demonstration Program (MRDP). The MRDP will commit $2.8MM in total funding from the Government of Alberta through Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA) and its Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund with co-funding from industry.

The MRDP is supported by industry through NGIF’s Industry Grants program (Industry Grants). Its members include Apex Utilities Inc., ARC Resources Ltd., ATCO Ltd., Birchcliff Energy Ltd., Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Enbridge Gas Inc., FortisBC Energy Inc., Pacific Northern Gas Ltd. (PNG), SaskEnergy Incorporated, and Tourmaline Oil Corp.

Together, MRDP and Industry Grants accelerate the development and commercialization of these eight high-impact near-commercial methane detection, quantification, and reduction technologies across Alberta. This milestone is another step forward in Alberta’s efforts to reduce emissions across the natural gas value chain through clean technology deployment.

The MRDP provides finalists with access to the Industry Grants operating model, enabling them to demonstrate and pilot their technologies, receive feedback from operators who are also Industry Grants members, and gain market access to support their technology development.

“Alberta’s proven approach to methane reductions is simple: focus on practical solutions, support industry adoption and deliver results. Innovative, made-in-Alberta technologies are lowering costs, creating jobs and reducing emissions today while keeping industry competitive and strengthening Alberta’s energy sector for the future.” Grant Hunter, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas.

“By pairing NGIF’s industry funding with the Government of Alberta’s support through AEPA, we are creating a powerful pathway to move these innovations from the pilot stage to full commercial deployment,” said John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Accelerator. “These projects align with our mission to support technologies that can make a real difference in reducing methane emissions across Alberta and Canada.”

Following today’s announcement, the selected technologies will proceed to contractual agreements and project refinement, with implementation scheduled to commence in the coming months.

NGIF Accelerator will launch the next batch of finalists of the MRDP who are currently under review as part of its ongoing program cycle with another intake expected to open this year under the program’s three-cohort structure.

About Industry Grants program
The Industry Grants program is an industry-led effort that offers non-dilutive grants to fund early-stage startups for technology development and field demonstration. The program specifically de-risks pre-commercial technology solutions that have the potential to increase the environmental performance of the natural gas sector. Each project in the program will progress through technology readiness levels through controlled pilot testing and field trials to advance commercialization.

About NGIF Accelerator
NGIF Accelerator is the not-for-profit arm of NGIF Capital and operates all of the latter organization’s technology and innovation programs. The NGIF Accelerator mandate is to de-risk and accelerate technology development by supporting startups through their pilot projects, field trials, and industry validation. It coordinates with federal and provincial governments to co-fund projects to advance market commercialization. NGIF Accelerator currently operates the Industry Grants program and administers the NGIF Emissions Testing Centre program.

Trican
Frac pumpers are large fuel consumers that emit large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Current fracturing equipment in Alberta is typically powered by diesel-based or bi-fuel (diesel & natural gas) bolt-on kit (Tier 2) engines. Trican’s Caterpillar Tier 4 Dynamic Gas Blending engine proposes to displace up to 85% of diesel with natural gas. The goal of field testing at ETC is to understand the performance of the Tier 4 Engines during operations in Canada. This includes, but is not limited to, diesel displacement performance during seasonal conditions, validation of the low emissions fracturing spread, and emissions performance compared to diesel and Tier 2 enginess.
