The Natural Gas Innovation Fund Announces its Round 5 Semi-Finalists

June 23, 2020

June 23, 2020 – Ottawa, ON
Natural Gas Innovation Fund

Today the Natural Gas Innovation Fund™ (NGIF) announced a semi-finalist shortlist for its Round 5, Stage 1 funding competition for clean technologies in the natural gas production stream.

In 2019, NGIF launched a $3 million funding call, in collaboration with Emissions Reduction Alberta’s (ERA) Natural Gas Challenge, targeting clean technologies that will drive environmental performance and GHG reductions in the development and production of natural gas. After undergoing NGIF’s Stage 1 industry peer-review process, 10 semi-finalists will now undergo in-depth evaluation and due-diligence in our Stage 2 Investment Evaluation.

Birchcliff Energy Ltd., Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Chevron Canada Limited, Perpetual Energy Inc., PETRONAS Energy Canada Ltd., Shell Canada Energy, and Tourmaline Oil Corp. will be investing from the upstream natural gas sector.

We are pleased to announce our semi-finalists:

A. Methane mitigation:

Kinitics Automation: Demonstration of a shape memory alloy-based valve actuator for zero bleed valves at natural gas production facilities.

Westgen Technologies Inc.: Demonstration of a proprietary low-cost, remote power generation and air compression system to eliminate fuel gas pneumatics and power remote well sites.

Challenger Technical Services: Development and demonstration of a multi-component downhole injection system to eliminate surface-casing vent flow from natural gas wells.

Packair Industries Incorporated: Demonstration and field trial of methane gas emission mitigation through an advanced instrument air compressor.

B. Hydrogen:

Ekona Power Inc.: Development and field testing of a Tri-Generation Pyrolysis (TGP) system for low-cost, clean hydrogen production from natural gas.

Standing Wave Reformers, Inc.: Development and demonstration of supersonic compression-based natural gas reforming for clean hydrogen production.

C. Carbon Capture and Utilization:

Hyperion Global Energy: Development and demonstration of a tandem carbon recycling system for carbon capture and utilization from exhaust flue gas stream.

D. Value-added products:

Red Shift Energy, Inc.: Development and field pilot demonstration of plasma dissociation of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) technology that produces hydrogen and condensed sulfur.

E. Fuel displacement with Natural Gas

Zedcor: Demonstration and field pilot of “Mobile CNG Storage” units to displace current diesel-based power generation with natural gas generators.

F. Enhanced Natural Gas solutions:

Modern Wellbore Solutions Ltd.: Pilot demonstration of a multilateral junction tool assembly at natural gas production sites for reduced emissions.

Quotes:
