The submission deadline is February 17th at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). Funding decisions will be announced in July 2026.

Who Should Apply?

Global Gas Innovation Call is a $2MM funding call offering support to technology innovators developing cleantech solutions for the Canadian natural gas industry, across upstream, midstream, and downstream operations.
  • International and Canadian Applicants: This competition is open to both international and Canadian innovators and offers a unique platform to showcase solutions to Canadian energy leaders, receive direct industry feedback, and access mentorship and project funding. Please refer to the intake guidelines on the eligibility.
  • How to Apply: Click the Apply button to access the Industry Grants program application portal. Complete the required information, and if you have any questions, please reach out to our team.

Why Participate?

Canada is the 5th largest natural gas producer. Joining the Global Gas Innovation Call provides you with the opportunity to:
  • Validate technology performance: This call for proposals seeks projects that advance technologies at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 5–9, with a minimum requirement of TRL 5. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to test their prototype, validate, and de-risk their cleantech solutions in Canada.
  • Access funding and strategic industry partnerships: Each selected project is eligible to receive up to $500,000 CAD, representing up to 50% percent of qualifying project costs.
  • Build visibility and credibility: Showcase your innovation to leading Canadian energy producers committed to advancing methane reduction.
  • Deliver measurable impact: Industry-backed support to achieve meaningful, scalable reductions in emissions and advance cleantech solutions.

Key Focus Areas

This funding competition focuses on advancing leading clean technologies for natural gas production (upstream), transmission, distribution (midstream), and end-use applications (downstream).
Sustainable Energy Innovations

  • Energy Efficiency (TRL 5+)
  • Waste Heat Utilization (TRL 5+)
  • Natural Gas Heat Pumps (TRL 6+)
  • Heat, Cooling & Power Generation (TRL 5+)
  • Natural Gas Resiliency for residential end-use appliances (TRL 5+)

For detailed information on the criteria, review the Challenge Statement document here.

Low Emission Gas Innovations

  • Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage. (TRL 7+)
  • Renewable Natural Gas (TRL 5+)

For detailed information on the criteria, review the Challenge Statement document here.

Open Category

  • Other impactful clean technologies relevant to the natural gas sector (TRL 6+), such as water management, pyrolysis, multiphase leak detection, LNG-related innovations, etc.

For detailed information on the criteria, review the Challenge Statement document here.

Eligibility Criteria

The competition is open to Canadian as well as international small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including technology development startups.

  • Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 or higher technologies. If achieving TRL 6 is imminent, late TRL 5 technologies will be considered.
  • Canadian and international small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are non-subsidiary, and independent technology development firms that employ fewer than 500 employees.
  • Technology development startups that are non-subsidiary, independent technology development firms that employ fewer than 100 employees, generate less than CAD $25 million in annual revenues, and are focused on developing and scaling up pre-commercial technologies.

It is not a requirement for any applicant to be a Canadian citizen to participate in this competition.

NGIF IG is currently not accepting applications from Russia, Iran and North Korea. Applicants are requested to contact NGIF IG if they would plan to subcontract any portion of their work on their project to the above-mentioned countries.

Eligibility Criteria

Each application will go through a rigorous stage-gated assessment and selection process to identify more eligible and deserving technologies that meet the needs of the operators and can be moved for demonstration and adoption. Please refer to the guidelines documents in the right-hand corner of the page that can be downloaded.
  • Novel technologies that improve the natural gas industry's environmental and economic performance compared to current technologies.
  • Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5 or higher technologies. This call for proposals targets projects that advance clean technologies at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 5 to 9.
  • Applicants, both global and domestic, without a prior presence in Canada must demonstrate how their proposed project, commercialization plan, and market strategy will lead to deploying solutions in Canada, especially in Alberta. Please refer to the intake guidelines for more details.
  • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are non-subsidiary, independent technology development firms that employ fewer than 500 employees.
